Choosing the right real estate agent to help with buying or selling a home is a big decision. You want to find someone you get along with and can trust, someone who is honest and upfront and someone who cares about you and not just your house (or future house). What to look for when choosing A REALTOR®
- How many years have they been in the business? Are they relatively new to selling real estate or have they built up a clientele and some solid experience? For some people, choosing a veteran agent is important because they know all the ins and outs of real estate transactions and can offer advice in a variety of areas.
- What is their average list to sales price ratio? Do they get their clients their list price (or something very close)? If you’re selling, you want to make sure your list price is in line with market conditions, but that you won’t be leaving money on the table because your agent or broker has underpriced or undersold the home.
- Don’t be shy about asking for references so you can speak with other people about their experiences with a particular agent. Was the person professional? Were they prompt in dealing with enquiries, appointments, offers and so on? Did they explain the process in a way that provided you a clear understanding of what happens next?
- Can they help you find other professionals like home inspectors, lawyers, or contractors such as plumbers, electricians, roofers etc? Most experienced agents or brokers have built up a network of reliable service providers and/or companies they can refer you to if the need arises. As above, if you are unsure of the prices they quote, check around to make sure it’s not outrageous.
